Automotive production and market grew in the first quarter of 2024

The Automotive Manufacturers Association announced that automobile production increased by 7% and exports increased by 1% in the first quarter of 2024. The total market grew by 24%, reaching 307,461 units.

The Automotive Manufacturers Association (OSD) announced the first quarter data of 2024. Total production increased by 3% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 377,070 units. Automobile production, which increased by 7% compared to the same period of the previous year, reached 238,274 units. Total production increased to 390,925 units with tractor production. In the commercial vehicle group, production decreased by 4% and 5% in the light commercial vehicle group in the first quarter of the year, while there was a 1% increase in the heavy commercial vehicle group. Compared to the first quarter of 2023, the commercial vehicle market increased by 2%, the light commercial vehicle market increased by 3%, and the heavy commercial vehicle market increased by 1%. In the first quarter of the year, compared to the same period of the previous year, total automotive exports increased by 1 percent in terms of units, while automobile exports decreased by 2 percent. During this period, total exports were 256,511 units, while automobile exports were 154,319 units. In the first quarter of 2024, the total market increased by 24 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, closing at 307,461 units. During this period, the automobile market increased by 33 percent, reaching 233,389 units.

The Automotive Manufacturers Association (OSD), which is the umbrella organization of the sector with 13 members that guide the Turkish automotive industry, announced the production and export figures and market data for the first quarter of 2024. Accordingly, total automotive production in the first quarter of the year increased by 3 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 377,070 units. Automobile production increased by 7 percent, reaching 238,274 units. Total production, including tractor production, reached 390,925 units. In the first quarter of the year, commercial vehicle production decreased by 4 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and by 5 percent in the light commercial vehicle group, while production increased by 1 percent in the heavy commercial vehicle group. During this period, the capacity utilization rate of the automotive industry was 77 percent. Capacity utilization rates on a vehicle group basis were 77 percent in light vehicles (cars + light commercial vehicles), 78 percent in the truck group, 64 percent in the bus-midibus group and 74 percent in tractors.

Exports increased by 5 percent to $9.2 billion!

In the first quarter of the year, automotive exports increased by 1 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted to 256,511 units. During this period, automobile exports decreased by 2 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, while commercial vehicle exports increased by 5 percent. Tractor exports decreased by 13 percent compared to the same period of 2023 and amounted to 4,562 units. According to the data of the Turkish Exporters Assembly, total automotive industry exports maintained their top position in the sectoral export ranking with 14 percent in the first quarter of 2024. According to the data of Uludağ Exporters’ Association (UIB), total automotive exports in the first three months increased by 5 percent compared to the same period of 2023 and reached 9.2 billion dollars. In euro terms, it increased by 3 percent and reached 8.5 billion euros. During this period, main industry exports increased by 6 percent in dollar terms, while supply industry exports increased by 3 percent.

Domestic market exceeded 307 thousand units per month in the first quarter

In January-March of 2024, the total market increased by 24 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted to 307 thousand 461 units. During this period, the automobile market also increased by 33 percent, reaching 233,389 units. When we look at the commercial vehicle market, in the first three months of the year, there was a 2 percent growth in the total commercial vehicle market and a 3 percent growth in the light commercial vehicle market compared to the same period of the previous year, while there was a 1 percent decrease in the heavy commercial vehicle market. In January-March of 2024, the share of domestic vehicles in automobile sales and the light commercial vehicle market was 33 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.
