Scania is revolutionizing transmission production under the “Remanufacturing” project…

Achieving a world first among heavy vehicle manufacturers, Scania has integrated the “Remanufacturing” project into its main assembly line in Sweden.

Scania has produced transmissions with reusable components under the “Remanufacturing” project. The new transmission is produced with approximately 50 percent less new material, while the production process can be completed with 45 percent less carbon emission. The project also showed that it is possible to integrate reusable components directly into the production lines of new vehicles.

The ‘remanufactured’ transmission was subjected to the same steps, quality and function tests as transmissions produced from completely new parts. This remanufactured transmission met all the requirements and was approved. As a result of the tests, the manufactured product showed that it met the quality and performance standards required for installation in Scania vehicles.

‘Remanufacturing’, which enables the reuse of old parts and production of as good quality as new products, is seen as a strategy that can be implemented by the automotive industry to achieve climate targets and support the transition to a circular economy. In the European automotive sector, ‘remanufacturing’ is limited to only 1.1 percent of current production in spare parts.
